Covering all aspects of communications from newsletters to web pages in this government-designated agency that compares international qualifications to the British system.
For the last few years I've been writing editorial lines for Mattel for Barbie, Monster High and Max Steel. I think that's about all my NDA allows me to tell you. But hey, isn't it good to know I respect my clients' confidentiality?
Academic and business editing
I've polished presentations, edited White Papers, reports and book chapters, improved the English and proofread materials for academics and businesses for several years.
With an international staff contributing ideas and research to a project, it's very useful to have an objective outsider to pull the language together and check everything is logical and meaningful.
It's difficult to find the time to do it though, and internal politics mean it often lands on the desk of someone whose attention is more valuable elsewhere. That's why I've done exactly the same thing for international businesses such as Wärtsila, polishing presentations, reports and papers.
My first client famously said 'I had no idea I could outsource this!' Now you know where to come.
I spent a year in-house freelancing for Dyson, content-managing packaging and manuals for their products. Absolutely meticulous attention to detail was key, as you would expect.
A selection of staff communications for Orange
A big part of maintaining a brand is creating a realistic, living culture within the company and promoting it through events and projects. I worked on family fun day invitations (hoot!); information on the charity of the year, NCH (raise); and the sponsorship of the Millennium Seed Bank at Kew Gardens.
This was just one strand of my work for Orange, first at Dutton Merrifield in Bristol, and later as a freelancer. I wrote brand guidelines documents, edited a bid to build a new network in Sweden, created positioning platforms for products and services and wrote user guides.
It was an immersive learning experience that taught me an enormous amount about brand creation and implementation.
LloydsTSB in-branch advertising and support
I had fun working on the monthly in-branch ad campaigns for LloydsTSB, each with posters and a point-of-sale leaflet. It was so successful that Dutton Merrifield won the refresh for all the in-branch information leaflets. Lots of writing for me, (no jargon, obviously - I'm allergic to it) and I know a lot more about financial services than I did when I started.
